RED EYE: Uber offers free helicopter rides on Valentine’s Day eve

Love is in the air this weekend—literally. Uber is teaming up with Chicago Helicopter Experience to provide free, 15-minute chopper rides to thrill-seeking couples.

Between 1:30 p.m. and 3 p.m. on Saturday, you can request UberCHOPPER in your Uber app, using promo code CHOPPERCHI, for a chance to take a 15-minute aerial tour of the city with your sweetheart.

Demand is expected to be high and availability is limited. But if a helicopter ride is available, you and your Valentine will be picked up in an Uber and taken to the Chicago Helicopter Experience heliport, located at 2420 S. Halsted Street. The flight will begin at the Bridgeport location and take couples over the water to Montrose Harbor and back.

Once there, you and your sweetie can enjoy refreshments and entertainment at the helipad while you wait for your ride in the sky.

“This is a great option for spontaneous couples looking for something fun,” Uber spokeswoman Brooke Anderson is quoted as saying in a press release. “Flying high above the Chicago skyline with your sweetie is quite the Valentine’s Day adventure.”

Though they’ve been in operation since 2011 in the suburbs, last May, Chicago Helicopter Experience opened their downtown heliport 2.5 miles from the Loop.

“We want to share the Chicago Helicopter Experience with as many Chicagoans as possible. It’s intimate, exhilarating, romantic, and why we’ve seen over 100 proposals in-flight,” said Founder and CEO at Chicago Helicopter Experience Trevor Heffernan in a press release.

And who knows? A helicopter ride could be the perfect chance to take your sweetie to cloud nine. Or, err, just to the clouds…
